NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By Maecenas.) The spring meeting of the Waikato Racing Club concludes on Monday next. The annual meeting of the Levin Racing Club will take place on Saturday next (November 20). The owner of the sprinter Kmghelcl made an effort last season practically to give the gelding away, but at the time was unsuccessful. Recently m refused an offer of four figures for King field. As generally thought, the Australian bred two-year-old Royal Ceres is good, and is lie is still on the improve, he may be equal to winning some of the classical races to be decided latei. After being unlucky and then running a great race in the Mitcholson Cup at Ellerslie, Mundane was backed as if unbeatable in the chief handicap on Mm second day, but she failed badly and was the first runner beaten. Looking particularly well, Tukia ran an excellent race on the opening day of the Auckland meeting. This form suggests that Tukia will be handy at the coining meeting of the bVilding Joe-Lev Club. , Koval Box, which was a much-boomed gelding three years ago, and incidentally cost the betting public a mint of money, is engaged at the Waikato Racing Club’s meeting. Royal Box is now a qualified hunter. Trainer T. F. Quinlivan had a good opinion of Fool’s Paradise, but was unable to do much good with the gelding, but since being taken over by Captain Gage-Williams Fool’s Paradise has won two important races. Although Trainer W. Pine’s team have run fairly well on the southern trip, obviously they were not good enough for the company they met there, ft takes a useful performer to win at Riccarton as a rule.

A few weeks ago Keremoana liad an ailment of the mouth, which necessitated his trainer giving the gelding in easy time. This may account for Re re-moan a’s failure in the Stewards' Handicap. Trainer O. Cox has a high opinion of Enaro as a hurdler, and, judging by the "-riding’s performance at Rice art cm. such opinion is justified. Enare may be callable of winning one of- the big hurdle events to be decided in the winter. Evident lv the term of suspension :n Jlirted on ’ the jockey, B. Rosen, had not the effect desired, as he offended twice in quick succession at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting, earning a further ter idleness, anil even after (lie present sentence is completed the filler named will be lucky if handed back his license immediately. 'J’lie scale of weights favours even * moderately good three-year-old in races like Hie ’Canterbury Cup. but despite tliis advantage the Taranaki-owned and I rained Sentown failed badly this year, and on his running at Rieearton has not shown the improvement expected, and has therefore not fulfilled early expectations. Possibly Seatown lias had enough racing for the present and may do better after a lot up.

Nominations for all events for the Woodville races close on Friday next, November 19. Tt is a tribute to the enterprise of horse owners of the district that Mr T. Carson \s thoroughbred stallion Sheffield was placed first and champion at the Wanganui A. and P. Show this week. The horse beat Warplane, which had won the valuable challenge cup twice and wanted only another win to become his owner’s absolute property. Mr Carson reports having refused an offer of 500 guineas for Sheffield recentlv.
