CHINESE WORKERS

RESTRICTIONS PROPOSED. HOURS OF CABINETMAKERS. BILL BEFORE, N.S.W. ASSEMBLY. BY CABLE—PRESS, ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT, Received 1.0.35 a.m. to-day. SYDNEY, Nov, 13. The Government is attempting, by the Factories and Shops Amendment Bill, at present before the Assembly, to govern the hours and conditions of Ghinese furniture workers. Opposition members vainly protested against the Chinese not being allowed to work after five o’clock in the afternoon and on Saturdays, also prohibiting Chinese from sleeping on factory premises, when none of these provisions applied to Euroj>eans. The Minister of Labour strongly defended the provision. He said that he had acted on the reports of inspectors, which showed that the. Chinese were working twelve to fourteen hours daily. Cabinet-makers told him that they had been harassed by unfair Chinese competition.
