LOWER TOLL FEES.
LONG DISTANCE CALKS. The toll charge for telephone calls of over 150 miles lias been reduced by half, and 1 the hours over which the halfrate charge operates is twelve instead of eleven as previously. Under the old scale of charges, subscribers were required to pay an increased ratio according to the length of the conversation and also according to the distance of the call. By the new arrangement, the subscriber pays a flat rate of Id per minute for every 10 miles in excess of 150 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and jkl from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. The longest calls which the Hawera Exchange may normally be expected to be received from subscribers are to Auckland (280 miles), to Napier (230 miles), and to Wellington (190 miles). The following schedules show the old and new charges from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.: TO AUCKLAND.
The rates from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. are approximately half the day rates, being a little less than half over the 'qngest ■distance.
