OPUNAKE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) MEETING OF TOWN BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Opunake Town Board was held on Monday evening. The members present were: Conns. C. A. Trotter (chairman), W. Fawcett, W. Gunson, F. Hammond, J. Caddy, E. J. Davey, and H. Munro. A deputation from the Federal Band (Messrs G. Hammond, P. Brooker and A. Hindi) waited on the board and requested a subsidy. The band had a big liability to meet in the payment ol the balance on the new instruments. The board granted a subsidy of £lO. The tender of Messrs Isherwood ?nd Bellam was accepted for the loan road works, conditionally that the firm will maintain the road for 12 months after completion of contract. The firm was agreeable to do so on a charge of £2OO. Tile tender price was £3053. The tender of Mrs B. Whiting of £2 for Saturday night and an option over Tuesday night for the exclusive right to show pictures was accepted conditionally that the Tuesday night he taken without option. The ensuing rates for the town district were fixed as under: General 2Jd, hospital 1 9-16 d, sanitary levy £1 10s (within prescribed area). The ranger reported impounding and releasing 88 head of stock during the month. Hie clerk received a reply from the Highways Board that it was possible a subsidy would he obtained for the main road concrete culvert. The Railway Department replied to tho hoard’s letter to the effect that an inquiry would he made regarding an excursion service during the summer and a more regular ordinary service, and a reply would be sent as soon as possible. The Works Committee was instructed to report on the widening of the main road at the bend approaching Otahi bridge. In reply to the Seaside Society’s application for two lights to be placed on the beach, the board resolved to grant the application on condition that the society maintain one light. The Public Trustee notified that £3338 had been paid to the hoard’s account at the Bank of New Zealand. The foreman (Mr Donnelly) reported that a. fair amount of maintenance work had been done, hut the staff had been latelv engaged in the making of concrete slabs for the Main South road. The water channel from the top of King street had been diverted to the Waiau river. A recommendation that the metalling of Whiteombe road and the gravelling of Allison street footpath he completed was made by him. The foreman recommended the purchase of a lorry for the carting of metal. He considered it would be more economical. On Tuesdav night the hoard conferred with Mr Matthews, representative of Isherwood. Bellam and Matthews. road contractors, regarding the charge of £2OO for maintaining the main road. A com promise was arranged. GENERAL. A very successful concert was held on Wednesday night under the auspices of the Federal Band in aid of its instrument fund. The items were very pleasing and of a high standard, the new local artistes giving a good exhibition of their talent.
