COST OF LIVING
REDUCTION OF FEW POINTS.
VALUE OF THE SOVEREIGN PURCHASING POWER, CONTRAST. . (By Telegraph—Special to The Star.) :: WELLINGTON, Nov. 4.' ~* There was actually a reduction of a few points in the cost of living as reported on by the Government Statistician on August 15 last, but t-he, outstanding fact in the large collection of official figures is that, comparing theprices of common commodities in July,' 1914. with to-day’s prices, it now takes 32s 6!jd, on the average, to purchaso what could have been bought in the pre-war month for a sovereign. Prices are, however, coming down as compared with September, 1925. The individual and combined food groups all show decreases —groceries five points, dairy produce 27 points (seasonal reductions have taken place slightly earlier this year), and meat group 128 points. The index for the group ,in September, 1925, reflected the great upward movement in prices that took place last year, the peak being reached in November. The index number for the combined food groups for September, 1926, was 51 points lower than that for the game month in 1925.
