VESSEL DR AGS HER ANCHORS. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 5. A heavv northerly gale was the cause of the Union Company’s steamer Waikawa, 5677 tons, which was coaling from a lighter in the stream, dragging her anchors. She drifted to within 100 yards of the rocks off Oriental Bay. Tugs were hurrying to her assistance, but the vessel’s engines stopped her just in. time, and enabled her to steam slowly back in the teeth of the wind. RAILWAYMEN’S WAGES. WELLINGTON, Nov. 5. It is stated that prospects for the settlement at least of one portion of the railwaymen’s claims have brightened. Proposals have been submitted to the Department bearing upon the payment of express men on a mileage basis, and the indications pointy to an announcement of a settlement. It is expected that the locomotive men’s main wages question will be deferred till Mr Coates 'returns.
SEQUEL TO' TRAM COLLISION. WELLINGTON, Nov. 5. Recently two trams met in a head-on collision on the W-adestown line. As a result of an enquiry both motormen were reduced to conductors, one for over-running the signals and the other for failing to apply the brakes.
