To the amazement of the police the head of the gang turns out to be a Berlin chemist named Hahn, a man who has a considerable reputation as a toxicologist. and who . has for some years past acted as official drug expert to the Berlin courts. \
Hahn, jt- seems, has made a regular practice of using for illicit purposes the large Quantities of opiate drugs confiscated by the police and submitted to him for analysis. In their stead' he usually returned some cheap Surrogate. Among the 15 persons arrested are a number of Russian emigres, one of tlie cleverest agents being Otto von Sievers, formerly a Russian landowner. This man, with two or three accomplices, is alleged to have been in the habit of making regular trips to Paris occasionally. taking with him' as much as a whole pound of cocaine.
