A. sudden increase in nnti-foreign feeling at Liuvang, Hunan province, forced flic closing of the Wesleyan mission and the evacuation of seven British missionaries, all of whom have safely arrived at- Changsha with their possessions, after harrowing experiences and narrow escapes from violence at the hands of the students. Missionaries from various Changsha neighbourhoods are dribbling in on foot and on horseback, fleeing from the wrath of the agitated populace, which is stirred by Red propaganda. Several Lutheran missionaries report that the. Northern generals are preparing for a concerted anti-Red drive towards Hankow. In the meantime, reports have been received of numerous sanguinary encounters and minor massacres as the result of guerilla ambuscades between the opposing forces, with heavy loss of life.
