Mr J. B. Murdoch, who had beep, on a short business visit to Wellington, returned to Hawera by mail train last evening. Air Al. G. Crighton; secretary to the Egmont A. and P. Association,’ and. Air R. McCay. treasurer to the Association, and also secretary of the New Zealand Clydesdale Soeiety, returned from Palmerston North by the mail train last evening, where they visited the- Alanawatu spring show. Alajor D. E. Bremner, M.C., N.Z.S.C., group commander, and Lieut. A. H. L. Sugden. N.Z.S.G., area officer, stationed at Hawera, went to Patea this morning to make an inspection at the continuous training course being held- for senior cadets this week. A Paris message reports the death of General Gerard, ‘Commander of the Second French Army, before Amiens and subsequently; of the First and Eighth Armies. Adjutant and Airs. Sawyer, of the local corps of the Salvation Army, left this morning for New Plymouth on furlough. Mr. E. G. Johnson, secretary to the Waikato Hospital Board, who has been visiting other hospital districts in the North Island, was in Hawera yesterday. He left for New Plymouth this morning, and purposes returning to Hamilton at the end of the week. He stayed overnight at the Egmont Hotel. Judge J. W. Browne, who has been occupied with the sitting of the Native Land Court at Hawera since Wednesday, leaves town this evening. He will return earlv next week to complete the sitting. He has been a guest at the Egmont Hotel. Many friends of Nurse A. Williamson, who lias been for sometime in the Cook Hospital, Gisborne, formerly of Hawera, a daughter of Air. and Airs. E. Williamson, will he -pLeased to hear that she lias massed her hospital examination with honours. Alessrs A. Failover and H. Rider, representatives of the British Electrical Company, are at- present on a business visit to Hawera and are staying at the Central Hotel! Air.: C. H. Backhouse, secretary of the National Dairy Association, arrived yesterday on a -short visit to the Hawera branch. While in Hawera he is a guest at the Central Hotel. Air. Max. Gray, son of Air. A. Gray, headmaster of the Hawera- High .School, has passed the Victoria University College terms examinations in . French, Chemistry and Advanced English (first year). A London cable states that Mr Coates will be sworn in as a member of the Privy Council to-day (Friday). The message adds that it is understood that this honour is the present limit of Air Coates ’ wish for Imperial recognition. Mr J. Pringle, previously stationed at Timaru, has been appointed railway business agent for the Wanganui and Taranaki districts in the place of Mr A. W. Wellstead, who has been transferred to the Auckland section (states an exchange). Mr Pringle was expected to arrive in Wanganui last night, and will probably commence his duties next week.
