MANAIA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Mil F. H. LOWE’S FUNERAL. An impressive ceremony was observed yesterday, wiien tile funeral ot . tne late All* F. H. Lowe took place, in deference to Air Lowe’s long association . with the local fire brigade, tne Alauaia firebell tolled every minute for an hour before the cortege proceeded to the church and cemetery. Deceased was oil© of the oldest identities and firemen of Manaia. Before proceeding to St. Cuthbert’s Church the brigade, under Superintendent G. White, assembled in uniform at the station. Sister brigades from different parts of South Taranaki were represented as follows: Hawera, Superintendent Morrison and firemen; Eltham, Superintendent Nuttall and Secretary Burrows, of the Taranaki Fire Brigades’ Association; Ivaponga, Superintendent Melville and firemen. An apology for absence was received from the president of the Taranaki United Fire Brigades’ Association (Superintendent P. T. Aitken, of Stratford). The massed firemen formed an advance party to the cortege. The ceremony at St. Cuthbert’s was most impressive, and was conducted by the vicar, Rev. A. C. Swainson. who eulogised the good life of the deceased, not only as a citizen but also as a good Christian and an example to all. The vicar referred at length to Air Lowe’s association with St. Cuthbert’s Church and the prominent part he had taken in the affairs of the church for the past 40 years. The vicar also officiated at the graveside. The cortege was a very large one, drawn fro all parts of Taranaki and including representatives of local bodies. iThe following were the pallbearers : ATessrs J. J. Patterson, H. ATead, J. Silvester. H. Proudfoot, L. A T oung and W. Anton. Alany beautiful wreaths were placed on the casket, including those from the following: Manaia Municipal Fire Brigade, Town Board and the Eltham Fire Brigade. Durinf the service at the grave Superintendent G. AATiite read the last rites ritual of the fire brigades. Each fireman placed a floral emblem on the casket. The deepest sympathy is extended to the sorrowing widow and to Alesdames G. List. C. and A. Gray, G. Cowling, Miss Daisy Lowe, and Air Bert Lowe in their bereavement. PLUNKET SOCIETY. The ladies of the Alanaia Plunket Society held their annual street stall at Alanaia yesterday, and met with great success, considering the state of the times. The takings amounted to £24. Great credit is due to Alesdames T. Sutherland (president), A. Gamlin (secretary), J. A. Hansen, Judd, Barlevman, Swainson, Sole, Craig, E. Burke, Davies, and the Misses Al. Hansen, B. Bridge, Gray, and Hastie for their work. Guessing competitions were decided as follow: Cordials, E. A. Mitchell, guessed 29; Christmas cake. Air F. Guy, guessed correct weight. 91b loz; dinner, A. • Jones; goose, Mrs G. Cunningham. PUBLIC LIBR ARY. The monthly meeting of the Alanaia Public Library Committee was held last evening. Present: Messrs T. A. Bridge (chairman). W. Snowdon, B. Badland, H Mead, j. A. G. Cosgrove, J Forresheld* at Air and Airs A. H. Christie’s received from Air W. Vincent. Correspondence was received _ from the Manaia Town Board, appointing Mr J A. G. Cosgrove as board representative on the Library Committee. TENNIS AND CROQUET. A tennis and croquet afternoon was held and Mr and Airs A. H. Christie’s last Saturday, the host and hostess placing their grounds at the disposal of the two clubs. Several competitions were decided during the afternoon, including a croquet tournev. which was won hv Mesdames J. S. McKay and R. H. Donald; a tennis tournev won hv Miss H. Judd and.Mr Smith /and a golf putting competition, which was won hv All* G. Aleuli. The takings were £6 15s. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the host and hostess, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr and Mrs ■'Christie for their hospitality.
