ADVANCES ON CHEESE
REPORTED INCREASE. FROM 6d TO 62d PER LB. . , / . V* *"• FIRMING OF THE MARKET. The Hawera representatives off Messrs Lovell and Christmas inform the Star that advice has been .re-, ceived that the Dairy Control Board has been authorised to increase the advance against cheese from 6d to 6-i{-d per lb. A Hawera Star reporter referred this report to a local dairyman, who stated that as fax as his knowledge went no. intimation had been made by the board to this effect, but that, if it were so, the increase was no doubt a reflection of the recent firming of the ' cheese market ,to 84s to 86s. Eighty-five shillings in London is equal to 7.59 d f.0.b., so that there is a max-gin between the inarTiet value of the moment land the board’s advance, even if it is increased to 6£d per lb. The principle governing the boards’ fixing of advances i 6 the provision always of a safe margin.
It will be readily recognised that there is no actual relationship between to-day’s market value in London and the advance made oh cheese shipped to-day, which will not be marketed for perhaps two months. The board promptly advises factories of any alteration iu the rate of advances, and, if the information referred to is correct, it- will be officially known almost immediately. The present official advances for cheese are: Finest grade fid, first grade second grade s)d. These advances affect all produce graded on and after October 14. \
It is interesting to note that cheese at 85s iu Loudon over’the whole sea.eon would pay out to dairy farmers on butter-fat about Is 4Jd per lb.
