FLOODS SUBSIDE SLOWLY. * (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, Oct. 19. The Mercer flood is subsiding very slowly, being only half an inch below the maximum at nine o’clock this morning. Sundays’ rain is having some effect in retarding; the fall. The weather to-day is showery. A NARROW ESCAPE. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 19. Three families wlio were living in a large two-storey apartment house in South Crescent Road, Spreydon, had a narrow escape from being trapped by flames at four o’clock this morning, only escaping in their night attire. The house was 5() years old, and had a woman not been awakened by a noise in the kitchen a tragedy would certainly have occurred. Of the eight occupants three were children under eight years. The building was insured for £I2OO in the Victorian office. FARMER’S PAINFUL EXPERIENCE TAUMARUNUI, Oct. 19. Mr. E. F. Stone, of Waituhi,' slipped while stepping over a log on his farm on Sunday, breaking a thigh bone at the liip. He was unable to move or to call for assistance. When he failed to return a search party .set out and found the injured man, who was conveyed to the Taumarunui hospital, where he is making satisfactory progress.
