AMERICAN ANNEXATION
RIDICULED IN CANADA. NO ONE DESIRES IT INTER-EM Rl RE AGREEMENTS. BY CABLE—PBESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGIIJ . Received 11.50 a.m. to-day. LONDON. Oct. 18. “As far as Canada is concerned wo are hoping to reach a mutually beneficial conclusion .rather than to force any position,” declared the Ptime Minister, the R|t. Hon. W. MacKenzie King. He felt sure the results would have a beneficial effect throughout the Empire. He did not know a. single Canadian who desired American annexation, or was even inclined to discuss, afi. Recent talk in this connection was mere partisan propaganda. “We Canadians laugh at it,” he mid. “It is nonsense to talk about America’s growing influence in Canada, particularly the tendency to Americanise Canada, by means of films and literature. The nature of the Canadian people will not- be changed by films, literature or any other means. ‘ ‘Canadians approved of reciprocal treaties with other pants of the Empire. The Australian treaty 'had given general .satisfaction. Canada wanted capital, British if possible, but she must get it anywhere it was obtainable on favourable terms. Canada’s relations with other ports of the Empire could not be better. It .would be unwise to interfere with the existing position.’’
