Durgapuja, the Hindus’ biggest? festival, passed off comparatively quietly at Kidderpore, the dock area of Calcutta. A procession was stoned by Mohammedans when passing a mosque. The police charged, fired four rounds and dispersed the crowd. During the ceremony of the immersion of the goddess in the Hoogly river, two boats capsized. Seventeen persons were drowned.
