FATAL FIRE.
HR TG A DESM AN G OES TO HTS DEATH. BY CABLE-PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. SYDNEY, Oct. 18. Fire destroyed Fowler’s Tannery at Botanv. The damage is estimated at £14,000. During the height of the blaze a station officer named Frederick Morris, who was in charge of the Botany Fire Brigade, attempted to enter the building. thinking some employees were still inside, and was burned to deafh.
"When the fire was extinguished his charred body was found in a crouching attitude beneath a rafter which apparently fell, pinning him, and a sudden change of the wind surrounded him with flames. The public school next door, in which were 500 pupils, narrowly escaped destruction through falling sparks.. The teachers marched the pupils out into a neighbouring paddock until the danger was past. Two firemen were slightly injured.
