REMANDS AT AUCKLAND

At it,he Ptoliee Court Vivian. Oharle-s Richardson (26) was remanded on bail of £2OO, om a charge of breaking and entering the warehouse of Dearsley’s, Ltd., and stealing footwear and a -suitcase valued at £73 15s 3d. Charles Powell Cooke (35), charged with breaking and entering the shop of R. W. Wilson, at Wiri, and stealing groceries and -tobacco- valued at £l3 18s, was remanded. Tihe police opposed l bail, isaying that the accused had a revolver which he refused to baud over.

Mr. Hunt, S.M. : “I won’t grant bail now; hand over the revolver and we’ll talk about -bail.”.

DUNEDIN, Oct. 11. 1 Mr. Bundle, S.M., gave, judgment this morning in the ease, Health Department -v. Waitaki Dairy Company, in convicting the company on two charges of .selling butter containing ijtiore than 16 per cent, of water, the magistrate 'suggested, that similar easesagainst three .retailers should be withdrawn and this question, together with that of the penalty lagainst the Waitaki Gompanv. was adjourned to November 12. ALLEGED THEFT OF FURS. AUCKLAND, Oct. 11. At the Police Court Vincent John Smith (28) and Edward Ernest Green (23) pleaded not guilty and were committed to trial on a charge of breaking and entering and theft of fur's valued at over £IOO, the property of W. W. Platt, on -September 14. BABY NEGLECTED. NAPIER, Oct. 11, Lilian Hilda Timms, a manned 1 woman, was sentenced to two months’ hard labour for neglecting a child. It was deposed that the baby was left for the greater part of the day alone in tip. house, sleeping on sacks, with no food. Its thumbs were sore as the result- of continual sucking. The magistrate. Mr Dyer, characterised the offence as “inhuman.”
