BIG DAY AT SYDNEY. A.J.C. SPRING MEETING. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT. SYDNEY, Oct. 9. The concluding day of the Australian Jockey Club’s spring meeting was held in fine weather. The track was in good order and the attendance was iI),UUU. Now Zealand representatives were not so numerous as in previous years. Battlement was always handy m tae H fiverley Handicap. He was lying fiftn at. the four furlongs post, then went up end showed the Avay into the straight and came on to win narrowly by had a length. Battlement’s time of 2min 3Pscc established a new record for lae course. . While waiting at the starting post ;n the Chester Handicap Air Lady became fractious and fell at the post. The jockey (Paper) suffered shock and concussion. Neither Cawnpore nor Giggle show r ed up in this Tace. King Abbey established a good lead from the start in the Dowling Steeplechase, but lost his rider after the first round The Stker New' Zealand horse, Bright Light, fell, and Prince Arini did not finish, leaving only four horses in the race. ' The w'eight proved too much for Mintern, -who led most of the way. Pay Day came away at the finish and won easily. Only four horses faced the starter in the Eandwiek Plate. Rapine was first away from Pantheon and Valamita. Spearfelt lost about fifteen lengths at the start, but was close up to Valamita going along the back of the course. Rapine then lead by a length from Pantheon, w T ho was a length ahead of Valamita all the way till entering the straight, where Pantheon took charge and came on to win -with three lengths to spare. The race was run in fast time, being only a second outside the Australian record. The last mile took In.in 39fsee. In the Clibborn Stakes Royal Tea was a couple of lengths behind the rest of the field most of the way, but Munro brought his mount through M opening in the straight, but was unable to beat Lady Constance. A protest for interference by Royal Tea against Lady Constance w'as dismissed.
As on the previous day Expense, in the Canonbury Stakes, jumped to the fiont from the barrier rise, but ivas unable to maintain the position and finished fourth. The results are: —
Canonbury Stakes, of 1000 sovs. added. One mile and a quarter.—Diorama (8.2) 1, Greenwich (8.2) 2, Green (8.0) 3. Eight started, including Expense, who took the lead from the jump on the rails but was soon headed. In a good finish between the placed horses Diorama won by two lengths. Time, I.ls. Expense was fourth. Waverley Handicap, of 1000 sovs. added. One mile and three-quarters. —Battlement (Coutts) 6.9 1, Johnnie Jones (R. Reed) 8.9 2, Real Mackay (Goddard) (3.10 3. Fourteen started. From an even start Chivalry went to the front am? led past the stand the first time round,i followed by Hinchinbrook, Piaston and Lady Valais. Battlement wms handy turning out of the straight. At the back Battlement foigcd ahead and led into the straight, staved off determined challenges by Johnnie Jcm-s and Real Mackay and won by half a length. There was + a length between second and third. Time, 2.59.
Chester Handicap, of 1000 sovs. added. Six furlongs.—Ariedon (8.4) 1, Calmest (10.4) 2, Braehead (9.2) 3. Twenty started, including Cawnpore and Giggle. From a good start Lilah led early front Chateau Tanunda and Ariedon." Calmest came up in the straight and in a close finish- Ariedon gained the verdict by three-quarters of a length. Time, I.lls. Dowling Steeplechase, of 750 sovs. added. About three miles. —Pay Day (11.6) 1, Reparation (9.12) 2, Absurdee (9.0) 3. Seven started, including King Abbey and Bright Light. King Abbey led for the first round from Mintorne and Reparation, but lost his rider at the jump at the foot of the hill. Minterne then had a substantial lead which was held till approaching the straight, when Pay Day, who was always well back and Absurdee, who was handy, showed up. Pay Day led into the straight and Avon easily by throe lengths. Time, 0.315. Bright Light fell at the half-mile jump and Prince Arim did not finish. RANDWICK PLATE. Of 2500 sovs. added. Two miles. Pantheon (Pike), 9.7 1 Rapine (Reed), 9.4 2 Spearfelt (Young), 9.0 3 Also started: Valamita. Spearfelt Avas badly left at the post. Rapine AA'as first aAvay from Pantheon and Valamita, and this order AA'as maintained all round. Spearfelt, gradually creejiing up, AA’as at Valamita’s heels along the back of the course. Entering the straight for the second time Pantheon took the lead from Rapine. Spearfelt came up on the outside and in an excellent finish Pantheon Avon by three lengths, Avith the same distance betAveen second and third. Time, 3.235. CLIBBORN STAKES. Of 1500 soa’s. added. One mile. Lady Constance (Bartle), 8.2 .. 1 Royal Tea (Munro), 5.4 2 Greenhorn (McCnrten), 5.12 .. 3 Also started: King Yaal, Perfect Night. Royal Tea Avas last aAvay and held that position until entering the straight, Avlicri he came through and challenged Lady Constance, avlio led most of the Avay. Won by three-quarters of a length. A protest by Royal Tea’s jockey Avas dismissed. Final Handicap, of 1000 sovs. added. One mile and a quarter.—Vaals (8.10) 3, Bacchus (7.4) 2, Tibbie (7.8) 3. Nineteen started, including Runnymedo and Imperial Spark. Vaals Avas first away but dropped back and then came again in the straight and Avon by four lengths in 2niin ssee. Pigeon Pie lost his rider. SYDNEY, Oct. 10. J. C. and E. H. Brien, owners of Rampion and Pantheon, head the list of Avinning OAvners at the spring meeting Avith £IO,OBI in stakes, A. B. Williams, OAvncr of Star Stranger being second Avith £5920. The total stake money Avon by Ncav South Wales, Avhich heads the list, is £36,81.1. Ncav Zealand is second with £12,737.
CAULFIELD AfEETING OPENED,

For the opening day of the Caulfield meeting there was fine, bright, weather after the morning rain, but the going was dead. The attendance was large.
Redshank led for the last five furlongs in the Welter, winning narrowly. Jockey J. Daniels has ridden the last three winners in this race. Benefix and Loch Tay fell. Benefix broke a fetlock and was destroyed.
Euston led throughout the Debutante Stakes, winning easily and establishing a course record for the race. Benefix cost 200 guineas as a yearling and also Avon at Fiemington last, week. Alanfred led for the last mile in the Caulfield Stakes, scoring comfortably.
He lias now Avon nine races and nearly £23,000 in stakes. The last half-mile was covered in 50sec, and the last six furlongs in lmin 144 sec. The owner (Mr B. Chaffey) Avon this race last year Avith Whittier. Manfred is engaged in the tAvo Cups. There Averc six falls in the Steeplechase, four ofit which Avere in the straight. NeedleAvork, ridden hy W. Goddard, won very easily. Bampion led all the way in the Guineas and Avon easily, never being extended. Heroic’s brother, Thracian, finished Avell in second place, but had no chance Avith the Avinner. Mr James Grice, chairman of the club, presented the oAvners (J. >C. and E. H. Brien) Avith the Guineas riband. Bampion has 7.9 in the Melbourne Cup. The Slave has been scratched for the •Caulfield Cup.
