(By Telegraph.—Special to The Star.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 9. Despite the' fact that there was a deluge of rain all Friday night, the Otaki Racing Club decided to conclude its meeting, which took place in heavy rain and on a waterlogged course. As only to lie expected, the attendance was very limited. The meeting must have been a financial failure, for there wa.s a huge drop in all sources of revenue.
The Puketoi Hurdles saw Elvaette and Hokioi A’ery. evenly supported, and they had the race to themseh-es, Elvaette draiving aAvay from Hokioi after the pair had risen at <the last fence together, to beat ‘Hokioi by four lengths. CaraAA'ock ran on better than the others to finish a poor third.
Of eleven runners for the Manuao Plate, Polonaise had the most supporters. She did not jump out Avell, and but for Kilmezzo falling a feiv yards from ihe post her supporters could not have claimed a second diA'idend. Girriebillie Avas early in front, and led Kilmezzo and Starbird oA’er most of the journey. He Avas a length in front of Kilmezzo Avith six or seven yards to go. Kilmezzo here slipped and. fell, and Polonaise gained second place. John Nod was third. Kilperon, Avho had run an excellent race in the chief event on Friday, Avas installed a good faA-ourite for the Otaki Hack Handicap. He jumped out best when the barrier rose and led all the way, to AA’in by tAA'o lengths from Sir Moment, Avhich finished better than any of the other runners. Gardant was third and Kilmiss fourth. Shining Armour and Nukumai Avere the only two supported to any extent in the Teone Memorial Stakes. The early running Avas made by Killoch, which Avas folloAved by Captain Gazeley and! Kilfaire. At the half-mile post there Avas little betAveen Killoch, Captain Gazeley, Kilfaire and Diogenes, but racing to the straight Captain Gazeley led Kilfaire and Killoch. The first-named pair Avere taken Avide out, and L. Pine, seizing the opportunity, rushed Killoch through, to Avin from Captain Gazeley by nearly two lengths, while Shining Armour got up in the last stride to beat Kilfaire for third place.
Lucky Days and Glen Innis monopolised the betting in the Pukekaraka Hack Handicap. When the barrier rose this pair both began well, but at the end of the first furlong Glen Innis led from Lucky Days, Volplane, and Hypnotic. After passing the four furlongs post Royal Land moved up fast, but at the home turn Glen Tunis was just clear of Lucky Days and Hypnotic. Over the last furlong Glen Innis and Lucky Days ran on best, to win from Hypnotic and Bonnie Marion. Gold Box, which was very unlucky in his first day’s contest, was hacked down to a short price for the Rekereke Handicap. He began smartly, and over the first part of the journey was accompanied by Joy Bird After passing the four furlongs post lie drew well clear, and ultimately non very easily by half a dozen lengths from Joy Bird, which stopped badly, and only lasted long enough to beat Lady Fingers.
Of the five starters for the Rahui Hack Handicap Royal Mint had most friends on the totnlisator* carrying more than half of. the grand total. From an excellent start Jazzy began quickly and continued to lead till a hundred yards from the winning post, where Royal Mint passed her to win by a little more than a head Panart was six lengths away third. A most unpleasant day concluded with the Waiorongomai Handicap, and of five starters Beaumont went out a very big favourite. After allowing* Bonideer to lead over six furlongs the j rider of Beaumont then called on the gelding, and he ran home a very easy winner.
