GORGE ROAD OPEN AGAIN. (BV rBI'KBKAPH PRKBS ASSOCIATION PALMERSTON N., Oct, 6. The Gorge road was again open for traffic this morning, but it is not unlikely that further slips will occur, as the hillsides are soaked after the continuous heavy rain.
HOAIESTE A D DESTROYED BY FIRE. AVHANGAREI, Oct, 6. Air H. W. AYoolley’s 12-roomed homestead at Alatapouri, where it has been a landmark for the past'4o years, was destroyed by fire. DEEP-SEA FISHING. AVHANGAREI, Oct. 6. A public meeting decided to form a club to foster deep-sea fishing. with Whangarei as a base. A well-known authority declared that he had seen in one day three mako sharks and two. swordfish near the entrance of the hnrl/our. It is generally known that deepsea fish are plentiful within a measurable distance. FOUND DEAD. DUNEDIN, Oct. 6. John Robert Ferguson, aged /about 40. a married man, was found dead in a hoarding-house, shot through the chin. A rifle was found alongside. COLLIDED AVITH A TRAIN. PALMERSTON N„ Oct, 6. At the inquest this morning concerning the death of Sebastian -Hulena, aged 74, who was found lying injured on the railway line on Saturday, dying subsequently in the hosptial, the medical. superintendent of the latter institution said that deceased’s injuries were consistent with having been struck bv a train. Air O’Seha. for the Railway Department. said that he could not understand the driver or fireman of the train which had passed not seeing the deceased. His own view was that the deceased was not struck by a. train, hut had walked into it. The coroner returned a verdict that deceased died from severe internal injuries. caused by accidentally colliding with a train at the crossing.
FOUND DEIAD ON A SEAT.
DANNEVLRIKE, Oct. 6
T. O’Neill, aged about 60, believed to be a. resident of Eketa’huna, was discovered dead this forenoon on a,seat in the garden alongside the Post Office, having apparently had a sudden seizure.
CASE OF AVATCIHEB PILLAGED,
AUCKLAND, Oct. 6,
The flim of J. York and Oo ; , on taking delivery of a case that originally contained 538 watches, found that the case had been pillaged and 388 watches valued 'at £125 were missing. Twelve seals Were .in proper condition and empty cardboard boxes remained. There were also two layers of cobble stones, whiih had evidently been used to make lip short weight. Indications point to the pillage having taken place before the case left Antwerp,
