About 12,000 trout fry died in a most mysterious manner on Monday night on the Auckland railway station platform. One of the officials from the Government hatchery at Rotorua arrived in Auckland with about 25,000 trout fry for liberation in the Whangarei district. The fry is carried in cans, and has to be attended to every little while like a delicate child. As the Whangarei train did not leave until the morning the fry had to spend the nicrht in Auckland. The cans were placed on one of the back platforms, to he out of the way, and the hatchery official attended to the fry at regular intervals. When he. went back at half past three to attend to his charges he was horrified to find that about half of them were dead. It looked as though something had been pnt into the water. This is a very unfortunate loss, as it will be some time before the fry can be replaced.
