FEAR OF HELL.
DOCTRINE; ATTACKED BY BISHOP. INTERESTING DISCUSSION. BY CABLE- -PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. LONDON, Oet. 4. An attack on the preaching of the fear of hell was made by the Bishop of Liverpool while presiding at a church congress. Tie declared that it could be understood once, when everybody took it for granted that the eternity of physical suffering was the probable fate of many. The old symbol was now' gone, and it was questionable whether the Church did well by adhering to it. Jerome K. Jerome, speaking at the commemoration of St. Francis, advised the ecclesiastical authorities of all denominations to clear hell out of the way. “We do not believe in hell nowadays,” he said. “It is the belief in hell that is largely responsible. for the spirit of cruelty "abroad among men. There is no authority for the Church preaching a god of eruelty and revenge. It is an evil heresy, stultifying Christ’s teachings until it is openly and authoritatively recanted, and the Church remains an advocate and apologist of cruelty.”
