Connell, of Eltham, whose success in the study- of architecture .in • England, as winner of the Rome Scholarship, was recently announced. by cable.-, He intends to return to Europe in.about-six weeks to take up his scholarship in Rome. He and) a fellow student .first- left the Dominion at the beginning of 1924; took positions in London offices, and studied at. the. London University under Professor Richardson and M- Hector Corfiato, to whose teaching, after tlicir grounding in New Zealand, they sav they owe their success. They express the opinion th $ t colonial students with their good standard of education and natural initiative, should, as a rule, be successful, providing they devote themselves to their work. In connection with the Rome Scholarship in Architecture, -it may lie explained that the procedure in connection- with the .competition for this prize includes a preliminary and a final competition. In the former, 10 competitors are selected, who are called the Rome finalists. The work of the successful students is hung in the Royal Academy. These finalists are qualified. _ to enter for the concluding competition, which takes place in London several months after the finish of the first stage. This competition lasts for 10 weeks'—the winner being the Rome scholar, whilst the second on the list is awarded; the Jarvis Studentship. The Rome prize entitles the student to three years -of nost-graduate study at the British School at Rome-, and'.carries with it a grant of £250 a year, whilst the Jarvis Studentship carries a grant of £250 n voar for two years.
