BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING
The Elthanu Borough Council met on Friday night in the Council Chambers. Those present were: The Mayor (Mr J. j llrid* r er). and Councillors Kemp, M'cKav “ Lewis, Garden, McWhirter, Ricketts, Rigg and Nairn. The Mayor reported that the motor truck authorised at the last meeting ot the council had been purchased and it would be ready for delivery at the end of the month. . , ' , The secretary <>i the branch of the Red Cross Society applied for permission to conduct a street -stall in aid of the funds.—Permission was Granted. ~ . , . Mr J. W. Turnbull applied for an auctioneer’s license, which was: granted on the usual terms. The Stratford Progress League wrote asking the council to support a resolution requesting the Government to-place a larger sum on the 192( Estimates: for the completion of the Stratford Mam Trunk railway.—Members held the view that although the work was an important -one for Taranaki, the Government had considered the matter, and had no doubt allotted as much as possible to this particular work. —The- letter was therefore received. , The secretary ot tire Eltlianr Soldiers Memorial Committee wrote requesting the Council to- accent the responsibility of seeing that the memorial gates, when completed and mounted in a satisfactory condition after the committee had beep disbanded. The council's responsibility, however, would not exceed the. amount allotted for the purport. of maintenance, Viz., £3O. —The council accepted fh<> position, . and the. amount- is to l>e paced in the: savings bank in the name of the Mayor and Town Clerk for . the , time being as trustees. REPORTS.
Recommendations and -reports, as follow, were adopted : The finance committee recommended: That the council disclaim any responsibility in connection with the liability incurred by a Taranaki representation at- the X. 7j . and South Seas Exhibition; that the matter of erecting distinctive cresses to indicate- soldiers’ graves in the Ngaer'c- cemetery be left i-ru the hands 'of his Worship the Mayor and the cliairma.n of -the reserves commit‘The works committee recommended: That the matter of forming ft footpath on the eastern side of Bedford Street be left in the hands of the overseer to attend to when opportunity -permits. The overseer (Mr T. Hodgen) reported that w a terra hies were cleaned on : Collin.gwootl, Stanners, North and London streets and E-’tham road ; footpaths cleaned on London and High streets- asphalt, patching done on Bridge and High, streets; -screenings pat on -Castle. Bath ftnd Sta-nners streets. Four yards of crushed metal Were used in patching Moir, Derby, Bourke and Cornwall streets: fencing done on Bridge at Eltham road; ground dented at London Street footbridge anct holes dug lor eucalypti. Sand has been placed on Gleutworth and Mills streets and shingle was being delivered a-t- county depot for chip crusher. All other general maintenance work 'had been done. Water and drainage: The dead, ends were regularly blown, out sen- tie tanks attended to. and main sewer- 5 i'll flushed out. The reserves caretaker , (Mr P. J. Will cock) -reported planting of suitable plants and other maintenance work, the erection of a- gate to the horse paddock, and attention to greenhouse *<?ed sowif-g and seedlings ftb Taumata- Park. He had put the paths in the cemetery in order? but it- stilt required one or tv.A days’ work. . Tim. inspector and ranger (Mr \\ . 0. Mr Donald) reported that eight head of ont-r-e were impounded. duly release d and fees collected.- Notices were sewed where necessary. •Th. abattoir manager (Mr M. Bourke) submitted a statement- of the stock sir tightened dining the-month,_ as follows:—Cows 101, bullocks or heifers 29. sheen 160. lambs 22. pigs 24 ; total 332. Comlc-mued: Six cows. In moving the adoption of hue Finance Committee's report, the Mayor stated with, reference to the Clause 6. concerning the council’s share in cost of the Taranaki Court at the Dunedin Exhibit-'o-n, that the council had agreed to contribute its quota on certain conditions. Those conditions were not carried out. and therefore the council's obligation to pay ceased. Or. Lewis asked if it was generally understood that the trees planted )n Stunners’ Street some years ago (and were now being removed by the reserves committee on account- of the unsatisfactory state of .same), had been paid for by residents ol the street in question. ’lu -reply, the Mayor stated that he had• .personally assisted in the purchase of the trees. Each resident paid about 10s to cover the cost. - The council had -planted them./ He supported the committee’s actioh in removing the trees, .because about 90 per cent, of them were either dead or dying. They had not grown very much since they were planted some years ago. As a resident of Stunners’ Street, he preferred to sfeo them- ire moved and more suitable trees planted. Or. McWhirter (chairman of the reserves committee) said that the caretaker and himself had inspected the trees -aml.-the only thing to do v.-as to rc-mov-a the whole lot, although about;v dozen were growing satisfactorily. They could not bo left at irregular intervals.' The It Payor announced that- all the enlarged .photographs of the ox-Mayors had now been received and were being placed in the Council Chambers. The council then went -into- committee to decide the tenders for the leasing of portions of the Soldiers’ -Memorial Park. On resuming, it was reported that the No. 1 area, comprising 32 -acres, was secured 'bv' Mr. A. C Rickets at £BB Bs. Mr. Rickets undertook to -stump and plough, five- acres and sow down in English grasses at the end of -his term. For No. 2 -area (2 acres). Mr. J. Madden was the .successful tenderer, and for No. 3 area (approximately 2 acres), Mr. W. Nowlove’s lender was accented. 'PERSONAL. Mr. W. Seown, who -has boon the engineer in charge of the council’s power plant for the past fourteen years has terminated Ids engagement with the council on account- of the new electric hr-'tall at lon at -the town bull being obtained from the Taranaki Power Board in-dead of as previously, from the council’s own rdanx. Consequently. Mr. SeownV. services will no longer be required. The Mayor moved. 1 ha.l (lie council place on .record the faithful and competent, services, rendered to the council by Mr. Seown. It was mention that during- the \Vho*le- fourteen years never once -was -there any interruption -in -the- service.. This was very important, especially with regard to the picture entertainments. Or. Eegg seconded the resolution and it was carried.
