AUSTRALIAN SCHEME.

*

STUDY OF AMERICAN METHODS

INTEREST IN THE STATES

BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPY EIGHT,

Received 10.15 a.m. to-day. WASHINGTON, Sept. 26

The American Government has received a report of the projected Australian industrial mission to the United States, ■ accompanied by the text of Mr Bruce’s address, and they have been very favourably commented 1 upon. Representatives of the Department of Commerce have assured the Australian Government of the keen interest that is being displayed here, and when details of date of Arrival! and the personnel of the delegation are obtained, instructions will be: given to district offices of. the- department in various [nuts of the United States to arrange thAt the visitors shall inspect any factories or institutions in which they may be interested. International experts here who are cognisant of the •industrial 1 condition both in Australia and in the United States, have given some .study to- particular phases or American industrial activity which may be of general interest to the mission.

SUGGESTED LINES GE STUDY. Received 10.50 a.m to-day. WASHINGTON, Sept. 25. It is understood that the general methods of mass production used in the United States may not be applicable to Australia, which lacks the tremendous consuming population existing in America. It is consequently supposed that the Australian study will be* along different lines from those of British, German, and other foreign observers who have studied American industrial organisation during the past summer.. Experts here point out that the following subjects may be observed by Australian visitors with great, advantage : (1) Plant management, which lias been developed to a state of high efficiency, particularly relations between foremen and workmen; (2) the system of employee ownership (there is a growing tendency in the United States for employees to purchase stock and share in the profits of the concerns in which they are employed); (3) American marketing methods, especially the extension of the deferred payments plan of sale to retail consumers; (4) the American railway system, with its unusual facilities for inter-State distribution of products.
