CRICKET

OPENING- OF SEASON.

VERY PROMISING DISPLAY.

It is some years since there has been, for the opening day of the son, such a fine spirit of enthusiasm as was evidenced, on Saturday by the strong muster of players at the Park and by the good general form shown by many of tliem in all departments of the game. It was very cheering, and;;; gives promise of a good season. y • The ground and wickets were in capital order, the day -was fair, and but for a slight cold 'breeze excellent for cricket.

In order to encourage the social as- V peet of the game and to give members and friends an opportunity of meeting, afternoon tea was arranged at the : kiosk, and about fifty enjoyed the hos- . pitality of the club. ... Sides were chosen by Lay and Neilsen as nearly equal as possible, and so many were present that an overflow match was arranged on another wicket. . The former’s team batted first and ran up 133 for eight wickets. The . total was due mainly to excellent bat-.r ting by Thomas 43 (not out), Lay 22 (not out), Veale 23 and Sugden 13. Neilsen’s team followed and were all out for 94, McCarthy 23, Crombie 16, Neilsen 16 and Treweek 15 all showing good form for an opening day. For the former team, Mills and Lay got two wickets apiece, Cheevers, Galvin and Maloney one- each, and for the latter AValkley three, Crombie two and Jennings, Neilsen and Treweek one apiece.

The fielding of both teams was exceedingly .good, and when it is recorded that no less than eight catches were made, several of them very fine efforts, it will be seen that there was a marked alertness which was very promising.
