In reference to the cable message giving Miss Effie Rout’s theory of the migration of the Maoris, a well-known Dunedin authority on ethnology and anthropology stated that there was no evidence to support her theory, which he dismissed as fantastic. All the. evidence showed that Maori culture was derived from the Malay Archipelago. He added that to develop, a theory that the. Maori came from, Europe via the North Pole- would be just as reasonable, as the theory caWted. The recent election of members for the Hawick Town Board will form the subject of stn inquiry set down for hearing in the Magistrate’s Court on. Tuesday-. At the election nine candidates were nominated for seven, vacancies. Thie of H. H. Bushel! and J. H. Edwards were rejected l because no deposits accompanied their applications for candidature, and! the other seven were according'y elected unopposed. The rejected' candidates, and a number of ratepayers have now petitioned to have tiso election of the seven 1 members declared void on the ground that no deposit is necessary from candidates for *a town board. In one respect the Taranaki Producers’ Freezing Works has surely had an experience which is unique in the history of the freezing industry in this Dominion (says the Taranaki Herald). The works were established 30 years ago, and although fire a few years later caused great damage, the original machinery is .still working, and no new plant has been installed for 28 years. Further than that, the machinery to-day is worth nearly 50 per cent, more than its original cost, and is still thoroughly efficient. This latter fact is due to the extreme care taken of it by the retiring manager and en, gineer, Mr. D. K. Morrison, who installed :it. repaired it .after the fire, and has eared for it all these years, assisted by a willing and competent .staff.
