SOUTH TARANAKI SUCCESSES

AT SOUTHERN SHOAVS

Mr A. Chrystal, of Elthani, secured’ three firsts, two ,seconds, and one highiv cdmmendiad award and.'third in the North Island chariipidnship for daffodils at the Hutt Valley show on Tuesxlay. Air Chrystal was highly commended' for his exhibit in the class for twelve verities, of narcissi, 'three blooms of each in vase; also second, for four varieties of trumpet daffodils, three hloom® of each. In the single b’oom class for trumpet daffodil, other than yellow, and for Incomparahilis, white perianth'. Air Chrystal secured first in each. He also secured first award for collection of pansies or violas - (not more than twelve blooms). ■The North- Island Daffodil Championship is a new competition, which was 'instituted as the result of the Rev. AV. W. Avery’s proposals, and - was won by Air AV. Slater, a, Hutt enthusiast, who was presented by Lady A.lioa Fer.gusson with the gold medal' for the winner, while lie also secured the silver cup for the best, c-ol 'ectiori of narcissi. Air R. Gibson, of Manaia, won a special prize for the best non-trumpet, and also the-. Buekington trophy. _ He was first for collection of 24 varieties, three blooms of each, daffodil foliage only to bp. used; also collection, of twelve varieties narcissi, second for six varieties of Leedsii, three “Barrii”: first for three varieties of “Tazetta” or “Trzetta,” hybrid, three blooms of each; first for three, varieties of double, three booms of each; first For six trumpet daffodils, one variety, bi-coloured; and in the single bloom .classes he secured five firsts. At- the Wellington Horticultural Society’s spring show, the, Rev. AV. AY. AvoVv secured first prize in the collection of daffodils, 15 distinct varieties, 3 of each., and also secured first maze in the single lvloom. doub’e daffodil, both awards being in the amateur section. 'This is the third year in. succession that the Rev. Avery has won the 15 distinct varieties class. —Argus. X
