BOTTLE LANTERNS

$ When Alpine guides are caught out in the dark on rocks or mountains without a proper light, and any of the party has a large glass bottle, a lantern is quickly made out of it. The bottom is broken off. and the bottle reversed, so that, the neck is down, carrying cords are hitched to it and a candle inserted in the neck within. It takes a great amount of wind to liloav out the candle. Campers can often make use of this novel Alpine lantern, and a neat method of removing the bottom of the bottle is to pour a little water into the bottle and stand it on tlie hot embers of a small fire. The glass wi 11 crack at the surface of the water. The lantern can be supported'by forked sticks pushed into the ground on both sides of it. Light the icandle by means of a, lighted match held in a stick which has been split with a penknife, and thus'avoid the necessity of inserting ihc hand into the the bottle.
