THE DAIRY LABORATORY
WORK FOR OUTSIDE FACTORIES.
SMALL FEE CHARGED.
“While'fhe federation authorities ate desirous that the work -of the Hawera laboratory should prove of benefit to all interested in the dairy industry, it would be unreasonable to expect that the full privileges shoufxl be made available to non-subscribing companies ,in the same manner, as to subscribing companies,”/ said Mr T. A. Winks, chairman of the Federation of Taranaki. Co-operative Dairy Factories, when.certain remarks made by a shareholder at the annual meeting of the Cardiff Coop. Dairy Co. Ltd?, on Monday, were referred to him by a Star reporter. Speaking to a miction which proposed that the Cardiff Company should join the federation’ and subscribe to the laboratory, Mr' J. T, Belcher, as reported in yesterday’s Star, advanced the opinion that without- joining the federation til© company had tlie right of participation in any benefits afforded by the laboratory, so long as it was subsidised by-the Goveiarment. “The laboratory is subsidised- by the Government,” continued Mr Winks, “but, while no condition® weiip imposed, the subsidy was granted only after tlie federation had .intimated that it was prepared to provide the equipment and necessary buildings. On that understanding the Government granted a subsidy of £IOOO per annum for the purpose of providing for professional services. s, “Tbe subsidy alone is insufficient to provide the equipment and. also meet the expenses of conducting the work, and. the amount given by the Government was practically a subsidy on contributions made by?the \ federated companies. In fairness to those companies which have subscribed to the laboratory, therefore, those who have elected to .remain outside of thip federation and not- to contribute to the laboratory, cannot expect- to receive the .same, privileges. . • ; “The services of the dairy scientist in any desired research work are available, without additional fee, to companies which contribute to the laboratory on the agreed scale. The scientist ’will also investigate problems for non-subscribing companies or individual suppliers, but in such dases a nominal fee is. charged, and this may, I think, be regarded as only reasonable.” Mr Winks added Hat the federation, though comprised-largely of companies in the southern! area, of Taranaki, was not purely a South Taranaki . organisation. He stressed that it was never intended as such, .but was open l to all co-operative dairy companies in the province. ’As indicating that companies in the northern area' were joining, in the movement, he instanced the Bell Block Company. On the coast practically all factories is far north as Oaonui had joined, and it was homed that, as the beneits of the federation became more rudely appreciated, it would become fully representative of the whole province.
