A HOMESTEAD DESTROYED
(P.Y TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) BLENHEIM. Aug. 28. The homestead of Mr John Cantwell, a dairy farmer at Para, on the Blen-heim-Pict-on high wav. was totally destroyed b- lire last night, together with the contents and outbuildings.. Mrs Cantwell and the chi’dren were at home alone at the time. When retiring Mrs Cantwell heard a strange noise at the rear of the house. She opened the door into the kitchen to investigate, and a great billow of smoke enveloped her. She collapsed, hut quickly recovered herself and hurriedly got the children to safety. No water or Resistance was available, the fire making a clean sweep. The buildings wore insured for (•Old and the. contents for £2OO, both in the Phoenix. The loss is estimated at £4OO.
DEATH OF A PRISONER
AUCKLAND. Aug. 30. A prisoner named Joseph Crook, who sustained a fractured skull on August 16 while coupling two trucks in the quarry of the gaol, died in the hospital last night.
