AN AMERICAN RECORD.

BE ATI NO THE TWAIN ACROSS THU CONTINENT. A remarkable teat was performed in June last, by two Salt Hake City busi-ness-men who travelled New York tc San Francisco in a. motor car in lesjf time than is taken by the fastest through trains. Over the greater portion of the route heavy rains- were experienced, making the. achievement .still more extraordinary in. view of the big mileage of unmetal led roads to- be covered. New York was left at 2.07 a.in. on June 14, eastern daylight—-saving time —there are three, time zones in the. United States, and daylight-,saving in some parts and not in others. Speed regulations are stated -to have been carefully observed in passing; through all cities en route, and consideration paid to the rights of other road users. The high, speed necessary to- break the record, the -motorists report, was chiefly attained at night on deserted country roadways. By 4.10 a.m. on June 15. Clinton, lowa, was- reached, next morning they were at Rock Spring, Wyoming, a-rfd in the small hours of the third morning at Reno, Nevada, San Francisco being reached fit 27 minute past- noon; the same day (June 17) With the necessary adjustment- between the San Francisco and New York time this gave- a total time elapsed of 81 hours 20 minutes' for the run. The two drivers, Messrs A. Jenkins and R. Peck, took it in turns to operate the car. The feat- will be best- appreciated by a, study of the following figures: Elapsed time—B6 hours 20 minutes. Distance covered—347l miles. Average speed— 4o.2 miles per hour. Fastest, time by train—92 hours 45 minutes. Fastest nett train- time (not- allowing for connections) —88 hours. Beat fastest time by train—6 hours 25 minutes. Previous record —102 hours 45 minutes. Beat previous record—l 6 hours- 25 minutes.
