WAIMATE WINS
FOURTH GRADE RUGBY.
FINAL AT STRATFORD. STAR! BEATEN EIGHT TO NIL. Playing at Stratford this ■afternoon, as a curtiaiin-raiser to- the senior final, Wiaimate and Star, winners .respectively of the, southern and northern fourth grade Rugby competitions, met to decide the provincial premiership. Waimate won by a converted try and a penalty goal (both secured in the first hail) to nil. Pacing the wind, the Waimate backs, punting high, kept action for the first seven, minutes in, Star territory. Cate •kicked a .penalty from thirty yards out. Waimate 3 •Stair 0 The fluctuation of the next quarter of an hour was mainly in Star’s favour, till Jackson, and Maurice Burke took the Waimate forwards almost to the line, and the hall, went across the backs to the opposite corner, Ansley .scoring. Cate converted brilliantly. Waimate 8 Star 0 Waimate then, showed io advantage, particularly in. the rear division, both tackling land fielding reaching a. good standard. . In the second .spell, the Waimate vaguard improved, combining in dangerous rushes, but was repeatedly (Recked by penalties. During, the later stages the Star backs essayed a series of clever movements, blit were unable to prevail against the- sure tackling of the Waimate. backs, and the southerners left the field with the Taranaki championship.
