AUSTRALASIAN CHAMPIONS. RECORDS BROKEN WHOLESALE VICTORIA RETAINS TEE SHIELD. BY CABLE—FBESS ASSOCIATION—COFYBIGHT BRISBANE, Aug. 21. The Victorians were record-breakers at the fifteenth biennia! Australian and New Zealand track and field l games championships exhibition to-day in the presence of 3000 spectators. The weather conditions were. again ideal and the track was in good order. It certainly was a day out for the Victorians, as the previous Saturday was for New South Wales. Victoria annexed the 440 yards hurdles, 880 yards championship, three-mile run, the high jump, equalising- the New South Wales championship total issue for the championship. Australasian record® were broken- wholesale. Probably the most magnificent, effort of the day was the epic run of Hyde in the three mile run. Mason's feat in establishing a new Australasian record in the high jump was the result of brilliant jumping. Grenham’s iraco ini the 220 wards was commendable. Burns (New South Wales) was unable to- compete. The championship was won by Victoria with eight firsts, including a point for the decathlon. The championship ta.h’e is Firsts. Seconds. Cabot took .the lead at the gun, but was challenged at 220 yards by Parker, who, at the end of the first quarter, established, a lead of two yards. The two leaders drew well away from the rest of the field. The order remained unchanged until the last half-mile. Parker gradually increased his lead. Cabot’s pace, over the final quarter was unable to cope with the leader, who went away, winning by . 150 yards. Cabot- was a comfortable second. Time, Gmin 43 3-osec. Martin. (Victoria) set tho pace, retiring after two laps. At the end of the first mile the order was: Hyde, Macdonald (New South Wales) and Savidan. This was maintained throughout the run. At the end of the ninth lap Hyde had a lead of twenty yards, which, at the end 1 of the eleventh, he had' increased to sixty yards. Running easily and apparently without effort, he increased his advantage over the last lap, winning by 170 yards. Time, 14:42 2-5.
