INQUEST ADJOURNED

An inquest was opened touching, the death of Francis Sullivan, who was found dead in the yard of the Excelsior Hotel last, night.' After evidence or identification had been given the inquest was adjourned, a post mortem being ordered. Sullivan was a Wellington tram employee, aged 36. BURGLARY AT ASHBURTON. ASHBURTON, Aug. 21. A thief entered J. and J. Sutherland's bakery shop last night, steajing the cash box containing about £5 in silver. Entry was effected by removing the putty from a window in the bakehouse, and the cash box was removed from where, it was .secreted in. the office. The intruder left- his hat and a packet containing four cigarettes on the floor near the wind'ow., A suspect was detained this morning. The burglary follows an incident on the previous liHit, when W. 11. Collins and Co.’s plate-glass window was smashed and an electric torch case valued at 11s stolen. FIRE IN A FACTORY. INVERCARGILL, Aug. 21. At 1.30 o’clock this morning a- fire occurred, in the sugar of milk and casein company's factory at Edendale. It started in the packing room ancl rapidly isnread to the stocks. This part of' the building was gutted and the drying plant was destroyed. Workmen, by great efforts, - saved the main buildings and valuable machinery. It is impossible at present- to estinmte the loss. The buildings and contents were- covered; in the Guardian office. The factory, which was built of ferroconcrete, was completed about a year ago to replace the original structure, which was destroyed by fire. RAILWAY" EMPLOYEE INJURED. AUCKLAND, Aug. 21. David Leslie Man son, a married man, x ganger on the railways residing at Penrose, was knocked down by an engine in the Parnell tunnel at .11 o’clock this morning and was admitted to the hospital with a broken leg and serious head injuries. INQUEST NOT FINISHED. , AUCKLAND, Aug. 21. Touching the death of Walter Cramp Hodgson at the hospital, it was given n evidence at the inquest that ho had broken a hip in a fall 'received on August 9 and had suffered for years from gastric ulcer. The inquiry was adjourned for further evidence. FINES ON EMPLOYERS. WELLINGTON, Aug. 21. The New Zealand Trades and Labour Council passed the following motion:— “The council views with apprehension the difference in the various fines imposed upon employers for breaches of awards by different magistrates throughout New Zealand. This council intends to call the attention of the Minister of Justice to these matters with a view to getting the law amended to prevent n continuation of this state of affairs.”
