CRICKET.

REAL “ASHES” SUGGESTED

TROPHY FOR COMPETITIONS

OPINION OF CRICKETERS. i BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received 1 p.m. to-day. LONDON, Aug. 20. Hobbs is emphatic that he will not surrender his precious tost bat for cremation. Hendren suggests that the holders of stumps should return them for this purpose. Two missing stum.ps have already appeared in a South London shop window. The holder says the idea was to sell them for charity. Prominent cricketers flatly disagree as to the value of real “ashes.” Gilligan thinks an actual symbol would be a good idea and would thus be a trophy consisting of an urn containing ashes, passing from one country to the other. The tremendous interest of to-day makes the occasion suitable. Hitherto the winning “ashes” were merely mythical. On the. other hand, C. B. Fry is whole-heartedly antagonistic. Ho says: “Let us keep cricket xvliat it is now: the sole game gloriously free from cups, trophies and whatnot. The interest of the game should be paramount, not pot-hunting. The introduction of parasitical symbolism is absolutely wrong.”—Sydney Sun Cable,
