It is possible, of course, that the country .school children may be at a disadvantage, especially in the case of sole teacher schools. Under the proposed amendment the bursaries will he slightly increased for the purpose of enabling scholarship holders to meet the lodging charges. Another important amendment is the alteration of section 134 of the 1914 Act, whereby the medical inspection of schools is extended to all “registered” schools. This will cover secondary as well as private schools. In clause 6 of the proposed amendment, it is arranged that under section 71 of the principal Act, a teacher who lias applied for, and subsequently refused, a position shall not, unless lie satisfies the Director of Education that there is sufficient and proper reason for .such refusal, be eligible for appointment to another position as teacher in the service of any board for a! period of twelve months from the date of his refusal, ‘or for such shorter period as the director might fix. This is important, as affecting the education boards in making appointments. Oases of the nature covered by this provision have occurred in South Taranaki in the past.
