“YELLOW PERIL”
REASSURING STATEMENT.
EAST VERSUS WEST.
WORK OF LEAGUE OF NATIONS.
BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT NEW ITORK,l T ORK, July 29.
At Williamstown, Massachusetts, Sir Frederick White, a former head of the Indian Legislative Assembly, addressing the Institute of Politicans on Thursday oh flic political situation in the Orient, voiced a reassurance against the so-called "yellow peril.” He said: "The Oriental awakening is a new incentive to progress for the United States, rather than a cause of alarm in terms of material power. If the gauntlet of a challenger were thrown at our feet, the fleets of Britain and the United States would see that the issue was decided in one way alone, while the conquest of Europe by land, apart from physical obstacles, would necessitate a degree of Oriental unity of which there is no sign.” Sir Frederick White said that the fibre of Western character would prevent Asiatic dominance, and declared that ".the League of Nations will take the sting out of the strained relations now existing between the East and West, and when Europe has assimilated its spirit, the Orient will quickly fall into line.”
