RAWER A COURT PROCEEDINGS

The fortnightly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Ha/wera -was continued before Mr J. S. Barton, S.M., this morning. WITHOUT LIGHTS.

For driving a car without lights along High street, Haw era. on the evening- of. July 12, Bruce B rein liar, car salesman of Hawera, who pleaded guilty to the charge, l?ut stated lie had forgotten on leaving the garage in High street to switch on the dimmers, was convicted and fined 10s and < s costs. I Victoria E. Feaver, of Kaiponga, who in pleading guilty to a charge of leaving an unlighted 'car in Regent .street on the evening of June 21, stated that she had lieen accustomed to visiting Stratford, where in the centre of the town it was not necessary to leave lights .showing, was convicted and fined 7s and 14s costs. Gordon C-. Elavall, .farmer of Eltham. who did not appear to answer a charge of driving a. car along Princes street on the evening of July 3 without a rear light, was fined 25s find costs 7s, the magistrate remarking that previous warnings had -been, issued with respect to such offences. WITHOUT A LICENSE. Hugh D. Lanibie was charged on two counts with failing to produce a driver’s license on July 10, and with, driving at .night an unlighted vehicle in High street. Defendant pleaded -guilty to both charges. On the first mentioned 1 he explained he possessed a license, hut had left it at home, and on the isecond that the car had been driven along the welllighted portion of the street. When he realised the lights were not showing he had switched them on. On the charge of failing to produce the license he was convicted and ordered to nay costs 7s, and on the- isecond count he was fined 10s and 12s costs. CUTTING A CORNER, Dennis W. Hill, of Oka.ia.wa, pleaded guilty to a charge of failing ito keep as near as practicable to the left-hand side of the roadway, when riding a motor cycle on July 10, from Princes street into High street. He .stated he was a new arrival, and was unaware that .he had to go round the silent policeman. Defendant was convicted and fined 10s and costs 9s. GIG IN COLLISION.

Henry James Woodihead, farmer of Araratii, pleaded guilty to a charge of having driven a horse and gig, not properly lighted, along Glover road after sunset on June 10. He was convicted and fined £1 and 7s costs. —Sergeant Henry told the court that defendant had stated he had one light showing. A collision with a motor car had occurred, and tlie occupants of the car had alleged the vehicle was . not lighted. As the result of the collision the wife of the defendant had received injuries necessitating her removal to hospital. CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP.

William A. O’Callaghan was charged with failing to notify the deputy regis>trar of motor vehicles of the disposal of a- motor vehicle witliin seven. days as required under the Motor Vehicles Act. Defendant was represented by Mr G. J. Bay ley. Sergeant Henry conducted the prosecution.

Frederick Silson, farmer of Awatuna, said that in June, 1925, he was ill possession of a Rover car, which -was registered in Haivera. He had decided to purchase a new car from defendant, and the old one had been accepted! as part payment. He could not remember whether he bad then handed the registration papers over to o’Callaghan, but subsequently he was unable to discover them.

Cross-examined by Mr Baylev, witness contended that originally lie had been, offered £BO for the old cat. Defendant was to have tried to resell it for more if possible, hut if that was not df) ne witliin a .month witness was to receive £BO. Witness admitted he had been previously fined at Stratford for having an unregistered car. * To the magistrate, witness said lie had definitely considered that the old car was part payment fo-r the new one.
