FIRE.
OUTBREAK AT CAMBRIDGE. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION A CAMBRIDGE, July. 2. -An old land-mark, the Farmers’ Auction Company’s two-storied premises, comprising grocery, hardware and l drapery departments and extensive offices, was totally destroyed by fire .last- evening. Although the brigade was off’the scene in p, few minutes, the flames had a, good hold of the old building, which was erected nearly half a, century ago, and there, was no hope of saving it. The brigade’s efforts N were concentrated on the Central Hotel, separated by ft brick wall. This building, which included Rn afield’s ha ird resin g saloon, caught fire several times, but was saved, though badly scorched, after most or the contents had been removed and the building flooded with water, much damage resulting. AYith the exception of the office books and records, pnactically little of the Farmers’ Company’s stock® wore saved, the estimated value of which was £15,000. The insurance on the. Farmer's’ Auction Co. were:— Building £SOO, stocks £12,500, fittings and fixtures £4OO. The policies are jointlv held by the Farmers’ Co. and the N.Z. Insurance Co. The hotel is owned bv James Fleming of Tuakau, the ocupien beino- W. Jury. The, insurances are not available. Banfiekl saved all his stock, but his shop was flooded.
