A SHARP RETORT.

Ola,iming that the Arbitration Court had given no valid reason- for refusing to make an, award l'o-r crutchers, Mr A. Oook, representing the union., brought a sharp retort from- the bench. Mr. Cook said that if the Court -still refused to fix lat least a minimum rate- the union would immediately petition the Government. Judge Frazer: “I. don’t care twopence what you do. Vou have .not the light to put to this court what seems like a. threat. It would be. a very .gad thing for the court to sit back and oonisder what- -the Government would think before awaking ,a,n award. No court can be influenced by threats.” ALr. Cook said that three to four thousand men: were deprived of an award. Judge Frazer: “The court has no w.i.sh to keep the cruteheilsi' out, of an award. We know the difficulties «und want you to .show bow to overcome them. The matter should be .settled by conference.
