KAPONGA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) TOWN BOARD MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Kaponga Town Board was held last evening. There were present: Commissioners It. A. Daw (in the chair), C'. E. Betts, J. A. Dawson, A. J. Herbert, D‘. J. Kehely and R. E. Williams. Messrs G. P. Cook (town clerk) and T‘. B. Merson (electrical engineer) were also present. The town clerk submitted a statement showing expenditure £451 and receipts £209 11s for the past month. It was resolved that the foreman be allowed a few days’ leave of absence in visit Welliugton, and that the board recoup him with a case of benzine in consideration of the frequent use of his own car on the board’s work during the past month, Cr. Herbert was detailed to superintend an experiment with crosswise blocks in the water-tables between the post office corner and Newton King’s premises, with the object of preventing the table scouring by flood water. The engineer reported having made arrangements with the Oroua Power Board tor the temporary supply of switch gear to carry him over necessary work, pending the arrival of gear alreadv ordered.
The clerk submitted a plan providing for the reconstruction of the board-’® offices to give office accommodation for the engineer and a show, room for electrical requisites on sale by* the board. In this connection the engineer favoured an extension of the board’s'operations in the direction of supplying consumers with power for cooking ' and heating purposes and stocking the requisite appliances for the convenience of consumers.
It- was resolved, oil the motion of Cr. Dawson, seconded by Cr. Herbert, that the plan as submitted be adopetd. The Board’s foreman (Air. A. Alelville) reported having fenced the eastern approach to the town bridge; removed sand accumulations under the bridge and dumped same at the corner of the stock road; cleansed the filter tank at the source of the water supply; repaired the concrete pipe line and the steel-pipe main; tapped the mains and made connections in lower Cemetery Road, / lower Manaia Road, and Eltham Road.' AIOTOR. ACCIDENT.
A motor mishap, fortunately unattended by serious results, occurred re s - terdav morning on the Eltham Road: Messrs G. R Smith (Palmer Road) and G. Keighley (Matapu) were pro* feeding in sejiarate cars to a sale at (Mahoe), and when nearing the Catholic church Air. Smith stopped Ins car for the purpose of giving a lift to a pedestrian, at the same time indicating to the driver, of the following car his intention to pull up. , The signal was evidently not seen in time to avoid a. collision, the oncoming car crashing into the rear of Mr. Smith s car, tearing off the tyre of one wheel and damaging the rear mudguard. Mr Keighlev’s car suffered to a much greater extent, the running-board being completely stripped, and the near back wheel and mudguard wrecked. The locality presented a busy aspect for some ti'me;\ numbers of cars being stopped to ren&er first aid, while the owners of the disabled vehicles applied themselves to measure meats and skidmarks PERSONAE.
At the meeting of the Town Board last night Mr. T. B. Merson, the *reeentlv appointed electrical engineer to the hoard, was officially welcomed to Kaponga by the chairman. In acknowledging Commissioner Law’s, complimentary remarks, Mr. Merson said he already recognised the importance <n his position andi the volume of work before him, but was confident of his ability to overcome the latter.
