DENSE FOG
SYDNEY ENVELOPED. TRAFFIC DISORGANISED. NO SERIOUS ACCIDENT. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received 11.15 a.in. to-day. SYDNEY, June 16. The heaviest fog experienced for some years descended upon Sydney and harbour during the night, and within a few minutes became so dense that all ferry services were disorganised, and with the exception of one or two, all trips from Circular Quay were cancelled. Hundreds of theatre-goers and other residents of the northern suburbs were stranded on the wharves waiting for the fog to lift, or for some venturesome master to take a boat out. The vehicle ferries also ceased running, and motorists had to make a long detour to cross the harbour. Shortly after midnight the ferry for Milson’s Point, with 1860 passengers, successfully made the trip. Iu the streets tram and vehicle traffic was impeded. The headlights of trams and motors could be picked out only a few yards away. About 2 o’clock in the morning the fog lifted for half an hour and then came down again, but was not so thick as earlier in the night. A’isibility at daybreak was about two hundred yards. ( A few minor accidents were reported and a ferry steamer ran on a reef in Neutral Bay and damaged its rudder.
