RIFLE SHOOTING.
HAWERA CLUB. A GREAT RECORD. The success of the Hawera Defence Rifle Club on Saturday at Wanganui is another in the long line of triumphs scored by that organisation since its formation. It will be of interest to many who follow the doings of the club, and also serve to show wliat a live and enthusiastic body of members it has always had, to. give a list •of some of the trophies won and held by tlie club and its members. These are now to be seen in Mr, Elgar’s window in High Street.
First and most important is the Col_ lins Shield, presented to the Hawke’s Bay Association twenty years ago by Mr. Janies Collins, of Hastings, and at present held by Hawera. It is a magnificent piece of work—a large, handsome shield, in polished timber, decorated with scroll work in various designs. At the top is the name of the donor, and below the Royal coat of arms. Across the front are two rifles crossed, perfect models of the weapon used in shooting, and so well finished in detail that the magazines can be moved and every point in construction perfectly shown. Below is a small model of range and targets, with a figure of a marksman shooting. But most interesting of all the work is the series of small shields on* which are inscribed the winners in various years. They are as follow: 1908 and 1911, Napier Guards; 1909, 1912, 1913, 1918, and 1919, Opaki Rifle Club; 1914 and 1915, Ohura (team containing three Lovedays); 1922, Hawera (Scanned, Ritchie, Palmer, and C. Harrison); 1926, Hawera (A. H. Guy, Robertson, Cross, Cliing, and Elgar); 1923, Karori; 1924, Napier; 1925, Greytown. Other trophies Avon by Hawera are as below: Cups presented by Mr. Hugh Campbell, Owaka (Hawke's Bay), and by Mr. A. A, George; Binns Cup, Avon by Rifleman C. Murch; challenge cups presented to Wanganui by Mr. G. F. Moore (Kai Xwi) and Mr. James Farley (Wanganui); the G. Tisch Challenge Cup presented to the Taranaki Association ; Taranaki Rifle Association Challenge Cup, given originally for public school cadets and of late years altered to single competition. The first names on the latter cup Avere Central School (Ncav PlA’mouth), 1908 and 1909, Stratford D.H. School 1910; then after a lapse of vears appear C. 11. 1924. D. ‘ Roots 1925, C. H. Cross 1926. Challenge Cup given by* Mr. F. L. Bone to the HaAvke’s Bay, Rifle Association : This was Avon by C. H. Cross. ‘ HaAA'era, in 1926, and previous winners include some of the best-knoAvn names in the rifle shooting AA’orld, namely, A. G. Balfour 1910, H. C. Loveday 1914, 11. McLeay (Opaki) 1915, . Sergeant F. W. Ching (N.Z.A.) 1918, IT. H. MaAvley (Opaki) 1919, C. C. Engstrom (Opaki) 1920, E. A. Ballinger fPetone) 1921, Arthur Ballinger (Petone) 1923, H. Harris (Christchurch) 1922, H. Hunt (S.R.C.) 1924 Captain A. Nielson (Napier) 1925. The Moore and Farley Cups AA'ere again Avon by HaAvera teams on Saturday, so that they hold them for a further twelve months. It is altogether a record of Avhich any club might justly be proud, and it is questionable if any in the Dominion has a longer list of trophies AA'on by its teams and indiAndual members.
