A SUCCESSFUL BOOK.
SENSATION OF THE SEASON. PIQUANT REVELATIONS. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Received 12.55 p.m. to-day. LONDON, June 3. One of the sensations of the publishing season is the' ‘‘Diary of a Young Lady of Eashion in 1764-65,” of widen thirty thousand copies were sold in three months. It is purported to be an authentic and historical account and deceived many critics, including Lord Darling, who expressed tlie opinion that “the diary takes its place beside Popys.” It is now revealed that the book was written by Magdalen King-Hall, a nineteen-vear-old daughter of a former commander-in-chief of the Australian squadron. The revelation is more piquant because the book included the description of a lover’s attempt to climb to the girl’s bedroom at night, and other naughty episodes of which a girl just from school was not -supposed to be familiar with. Miss King-Hall said that she wrote the book to escape from boredom, and added that she had already made considerable money from the book. “I have had a ‘bust,’ but the fami'v is making me invest the rest,” she remarked.—A.. and N.Z.
