AFTER THIRTY-FOUR YEARS.
A LONG-LOST NEEDLE. REMOVAL FROM WOMAN’S HAND A young lady at Timaru, while engaged in sewing 34 years ago, had the misfortune to run the needle into her hand. It broke, and the portion embedded in the flesh was not recovered. The victim felt from the outset that there remained in her hand a piece of the needle, but at that period science had not reached such a stage as tod;qr, *md although she experienced some inconvenience, she suffered in silence, hoping and believing that time would free, her from the unwelcome visitor. But years passed, and the missing needle was to. some extent for. gotten. A few days ago, says the Timaru Post, the lady had a reminder of the presence of the needle, an inch in length. Her hand became almost paralysed, with acute pain below the wrist. Medical aid was sought, and by the use of the X-ray the missing needle was discovered and removed, with instant relief to the patient. The needle, which had been in the lady’s flesh for more than 30 years, was coated with rust. The evil effects which recently appeared are fast disappearing, but medical opinion is that had it not been removed permanent paralysis of the arm 1 would inevitably have resulted.
