DELUGE AT AUCKLAND. '
ROADS INUNDATED
BRIDGES WASHED AWAY
(by telegraph—press association.) AU GKLiAINiD , May 21. Auckland to-day entered or the fourth day of heavy continuous rain. Scores of cellars in the city are flooded and considerable damage lias been done to goods. There is extensive flooding in the suburbs and back yards are becoming miniature lakes. Some houses are .almost out off from the roads. Work on the wharves is almost at a standstill. In forty-eight hours to midnight the rainfall was 6.85 inches. Reports of damage have been received from many country places. Puhoi River inundated the Pulioa store and post office and the main street is four feet under water. The river was covering the bridge in the township. Serious flooding is threatened in the Waiwena. valley. At Waimauku, Huapai and Kumeu several roads are submerged and several bridges- washed away. At Kumeu tire post o dice and railway' station are isolated. The postmistress waded through water a. foot deep for the afternoon mail. The water rose later in the post office. a.nd is now one foot deep along the southern railway line. Though the Waikato- River is still rising no serious damage has been reported. HEAVY RAIN AT THAMES. THAMES. May 21. Two point seventeen indies of rain fell for the 2-1 hours ended 9 a.m. today. Minor washouts on the railway line caused the cancellation of the early train, and a delay of one hour to the express. The weather is moderating. WASH-OUTS ON' THE RAILWAY LINE. AUCKLAND. May 21. There are severe wash-outs on the railway .line between Auckland and Whangarei, and the service is- interrupted. From this end beyond Henderson all traffic on the northern route is dislocated. Slips at the Newmarket end of the Parnell tunnell were discovered in time to avert any accident and were cleared away so as to permit trains to pass.cautiously. A slip between Kaukapakapa and Kawhia held up the inward-hound train due here at 6.12 o’clock last night. A relief train from Helensvilto encountered a wash-out near Pukenui. It had to return and the passengers had to he accommodated at Kaukapakapa hotel. A wash-out near Waimauku compelled the train to return to Huapai, and passengers stayed at the hotel. The train from the city at 4.5 p.m. for Kumeu encountered a wash-out, and returned to Henderson. Many other wash-outs are reported on the northern line.
