NORTHLAND TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION.

The Northland tunnel was again mentioned at the City Council meeting last night, when the report of the com. missioners who inquired into matters covering tunnel construction was considered in committee. . Eventually the Mayor stated that it had been decided not to make the report public till certain of the council s officers concerned with the tunnel had an opportunity of making statements in their defence before the committee.
HESAiVY RAIN IN POVERTY BAY
GISBORNE, May 21. The rainfall for the past two clays totalled 3.10 inches. Heavier rams has newer fallen in the Viaiapu district. Rivers and creeks are running high.
SUPREME COURT AT WELLINGTON.
WELLINGTON, May 21. Mr Justice Reed sentenced the undermentioned prisoners at the Supreme Court to-day. . James Duff, a seaman, for breaking, entering and theft at New Plymouth, was admitted to' probation for two years, and was ordered to take out a prohibition order, the crime having been committed under the influence of drink. He was also ordered to pay £l2 for a damaged window. Albert, Windsor, for carnal knowledge, was sentenced to three months imprisonment.
