AUSTRALIA’S BATTING. PONSFORD’S GOOD EXHIBITION. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT, LONDON. May 18. The last wicket stand served to reveal the real Ponsford. Last, night’s pottering was due to the shocking light, but be was quick-footed and full of resource, going for runs all the time and mating the ball with the full force of tli € bat with an exhilaarting thwack. Some of his carpet drives to long-on were delightful; Even Hendren could not prevent the batsmen from running four. The last pair, despite the squashiness iof the; turf, scored with enterprising speed. The bowling had to lie watched carefully, but the freedom of the batsmen did a lot to disne' the, bogey that the Australians would he all at sea on wet wickets. Stevens, in one over, had Richardson tied up. one snick just- missing the •vicket and going between the wicketkeeper’s legs, but after that his piny was of the soundest. He was vicing with Ponsford in aggressiveness. Altogether the day was most satisfactory from th G Australians’ point of view.
