AUSTRALIA’S STRIKES
THE MINING DISPUTE. A NEW DEVELOPMENT MINERS DEMAND CONCESSIONS. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION -COPYRIGHT. Received 11.10 a.m to-day. SYDNEY, May 18. An unexpected development of the coal mine engine-drivers’ strike occurred when the miners, employees of the Sydney Collieries, Ltd., which had acoeeded to the claims of the enginedrivers, refused to resume work unless the management gave them the same increases as they had undertaken to concede to the engine-drivers. This demand the owners refused. The miners at .a. later meeting, decided to* resume work* this morning, but whether they will remain at work is to be decided by .a federation meeting to-day. LATEST DEVELOPMENTS. SYDNEY, May 17. The members of the Coachbuilders’ Union who failed to work on Saturday were dismissed to-day. All the big works are affected. The steamer Karoola was paid off on the arrival of the vessel from West Australia. This* is the first interstate steamer to be tied up as the result of the coal strike.
