MAORI JOY-RIDER IMPRISONED. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) PALMERSTON N., May 17. George Mafciu, aged 24, a Maori, was charged at the Magistrate’s Court with converting a car to hi si own use. He was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment, to be cumulative with the term the.accused was now undergoing for obtaining money at Wellington. The car was the property of a Government servant, and was left in Church Street. The accused took it for an hour’s drive, later returning it. CHARABANC DESTROYED. AUCKLAND, May 17. A charabanc owned by M. McCarthy was destroyed by fire near Raraarama through the engine backfiring. The loss is estimated at £ISOO.
EIRE AT DEVONPORT. AUCKLAND, May 17. A fire at Devonport- at 1 o’clock on Sunday morning destroyed four rooms of a six-roomed house owned- by R. Fredatoviteh, Victoria road. Mrs Fredatoviteh and children made a hasty exit, Fredatoviteh being away from home. It is understood that, the house and furniture were insured.
